Introducing the New Balance 2002R
New Balance 2002R shoes technically made their first appearance in 2020, but they were, in effect, a re-release of the ‘2002’ running shoes from 2010, albeit with some minor (much-appreciated) alterations to the core design. Visually, the shoe was less clunky, with a streamlined appearance for greater cohesion from heel to toe. The biggest change, however, courtesy of product line manager Tetsuya Shon, was the inclusion of the sole unit seen on the 860v2, which was noticeably lighter and more practical.
2002Rs are packed full of features, including ABZORB and N-ergy cushioning. These technologies combine to provide maximum comfort at all times, ensuring a smooth ride and, just as importantly, protection for your feet. The collection also incorporates a mesh upper with suede overlays, using effective linework and sectioning to showcase the aesthetic of the Y2K era. When enhanced with vivid colours, these sneakers truly help you stand out from the crowd.
Aside from the obvious improvements, one substantial reason why the NB 2002R succeeded where its predecessor failed was that it had the backing of designers such as Salehe Bembury (a former member of Versace) and the publicity afforded by several high-profile projects. It also didn’t have the expensive price tag that came with a shoe marketed toward the luxury types, thereby expanding its reach to a general audience.
