Introducing the Air Jordan 4: The Makings of a Sneaker Legend
When the first rendition of the Air Jordan 4 dropped in 1989, it marked a turning point in the sneaker game—the sport of basketball, too. The man himself, His Airness, Michael Jordan, stepped onto the court, black-and-red sneakers laced up, and showed the world that nothing could come close to the cultural influence of this one-in-a-million player, nor the shoes that he wore. He showed off the design thought up by footwear industry genius Tinker Hatfield with the certainty that the AJ4 was a worthy successor to the models that had come before. And he was right, unsurprisingly.
So, what was it that made the AJ4s so groundbreaking? First off, they didn’t try to recreate the wheel; their immediate predecessor, the AJ3, was there and ready to offer inspiration, and Hatfield took it gladly, replicating the use of visible Air units and the mid-top silhouette that had resonated with sneakerheads. There were clear differences, however, the most notable of which was a set of triangular wings on the upper, added to provide additional support and stability. These were further complemented by mesh panelling (for increased breathability) and a heel tab.
Though originating as a basketball sneaker, the AJ4 is today recognised as a staple of the lifestyle crowd, often worn in casual settings. The shoe’s allure is enhanced by its frequent scarcity, with models such as the Military Black and White Cement being hard to track down outside the aftermarket. That’s why we strongly recommend keeping your eyes peeled for the latest releases from JD AU—you’ll want to be first in line.
