The History of the PUMA Brand
Almost everyone knows the name PUMA: it’s one of the biggest fashion brands in the world and has been for a very long time. What you might not know, though, is that the company has strong ties to another of the top names in the industry.
PUMA (originally known as ‘RUDA’) was officially established in 1948, but before then, its founder, Rudolf Dassler, had a stint running a footwear business alongside his brother, Adolf. Known as ‘Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory,’ the German-based business ran from 1919 and ended when the brothers had a falling out, leading to them deciding to separate and form their own brands. One was called ‘PUMA,’ as you know; the other adopted the name . . . ‘adidas.’
Using the knowledge acquired from his time running a footwear business with his brother, Rudolf successfully grew PUMA from a no-name brand to a behemoth of the footwear world. The brand found lots of initial success with its football boots, the first of which was the ATOM, and continued to carve out a share of the running market, with many medal-winning Olympic athletes wearing PUMA shoes on the track. Today, however, the brand’s offerings stretch further, encompassing lifestyle sneakers (such as the previously mentioned Speedcat and Palermo) and a ton of high-quality clothes. These can be found in the JD Sports AU lineup, so start browsing now!
