Since 1987, Nike's Air Max series has pushed the game forward — and 2019 is no different. After the Air Max 270 claimed the tallest Air unit crown, Nike Sportswear's Dylan Raasch and Jesi Small went back to the lab with a clear mission: build a sneaker for those on their feet for hours at a time.
The answer? 360 degrees of Air, visible from every angle. First teased back in 2006 on the Air Max 360 I and II, the concept of a foamless shoe finally became reality. Now, 13 years later, the 720 takes it to another level — an Air unit that wraps a full 360 both horizontally and vertically. Going 6mm taller than the 270, it's officially the tallest Air unit ever engineered.
Nike didn't stop at height. The Air bag extends laterally too, with the thickest cushioning surrounding the border of the foot. That cradling effect delivers bounce, stability, and a buoyant feel that carries you through every step.
The Details
While the Air unit looks forward, the upper pulls from that early-2000s era of futuristic design — unorthodox shapes, wave-like patterns, the kind of heat Marty McFly would've rocked. A synthetic upper keeps support locked in, while mesh construction brings easy breathability. Strategic mesh pods at the sides add structure, and a translucent rubber heel window spotlights that record-breaking Air unit.
